§ 74-123. Assignment notification and placement of numbers on addressed property.

Latest version.
  • (a)

Assignment responsibility. Under this division, addresses shall be assigned as follows:

    (1)

The building official shall assign to each addressed property located on any street or public way in the jurisdiction of this division its respective number under the system provided for in this division. Existing numbers shall be changed only where it is necessary in the judgment of the planning commission to maintain the order and uniformity sought by this article.

    (2)

House numbers shall be assigned in all new subdivisions. The building official shall provide appropriate address numbers. The planning commission shall approve such numbers as necessary to maintain a systematic organized location system, as provided under this article and the development standards ordinance in appendix B.

    (b)

Notifications. Written notification of the proper address of each addressed property shall be provided to the owner, occupant, or agent of each property and the postmaster and utility companies.

    (c)

    Placement of address numbers.

    (1)

Such numbers shall be placed on existing buildings within 30 days after the date of notification. The numbers shall not be less than three inches in height and shall be durable and clearly visible, in contrasting color to the building.

    (2)

The numbers shall be conspicuously placed immediately on, above, on or at the side of the front door of each building so that the property number can be plainly identified from the street and, also, face mail delivery traffic on mailboxes. Whenever any building is situated more than 50 feet from the street line, or whenever view of the house is blocked by trees or shrubs, the property number shall also be placed near the walk, driveway, or common entrance to the building and attached to the appropriate structure so as to be easily identified from the street.

    (3)

When a house or other building has been assigned its respective number, the owner, occupant, or agent shall place or cause to be placed upon each structure the number assigned, as provided in this division, at the expense of the owner, occupant, or agent.
